Buy- A-Pay was a breakthrough in slot product design decades ago. The concept was simple: play more, get better odds. The Blazing Sevens reel-spinner has been the signature product for decades and still works well today. A few players might bet just one or two credits, but not for long: the key to the concept is that it’s easy to see that you’re missing out on the big pays unless you play the max three credits. Slot managers everywhere have tales of being confronted by new guests wondering why they didn’t get the big jackpot for lining up three fiery sevens on the pay line. The feeling those guests had when told they only selected one credit instead of three must have been somewhat akin to seeing your lottery numbers hit when you didn’t play.

A similar, equally popular, product is the standard Jacks or Better video poker. The royal flush is a straight multiplier on credits 1 to 4 paying from 250 to 1,000 respectively. But with that fifth credit, it jumps to 4,000, which is 2,750 more than a straight multiple. Rather than feeling bad about having to increase to the five-credit bet, players appreciate the value of those better odds.

Today, the best betting strategies on video reels are anything but obvious. Playing the minimum bet is OK on some games, a disadvantage on others. Steve Walther, head of marketing and product management at Konami Gaming Inc., explains that many of their newest offerings at G2E are “focusing our messaging on showing the value of betting higher.”

“We did a lot better job in the early 90’s in communicating more to the players,” Walther says. “Buy-A-Pay was easy to understand, (unlike designs) today.” Accordingly, for many of their new releases, Konami has made a dramatic change in how they merchandise the button panel, reel strips, even sound tracks. Each of these has been done to better convey the fact that a higher bet means better player value and rewards.

The flagship of Konami’s new line of titles, which are so far only being offered only on their large-format Concerto Opus cabinet, is Solstice Celebration Triple Sparkle. The original Solstice Celebration has been a top title for Konami for years and was one of the first with an Xtra Reward feature that enables players to nudge stacked symbols with a second symbol replacement. This Sparkle transformation feature is activated when you line up two or more stacked symbols as a bonus benefit for making the Xtra Reward ante bet.

In addition to a new symbol-driven linked progressive mechanic, what makes this new version of Solstice Celebration unique is the integration of the button panel, screen characters and sound system to emphasize the value in making a max bet. The decision becomes even easier for players, since the game has just three bets: 60, 120 and 180 credits. As shown here, the button panel uses animated graphics to highlight the 180-level bet that activates the Triple Sparkle feature and the two progressives. The entire panel has a glimmering rainbow effect emanating from the max bet position. Likewise, once it’s activated, players hear the unique sound of a wind chime, and the reel symbols have a sparkle animation around the hero Sun characters, the progressive meters and the bet meter. There’s absolutely no doubt from the player’s perspective that the best value of the game rests with a max bet option.

The huge Concerto Opus cabinet premiered at the NIGA show in April of this year and was released for sale last month. It joins other large-format games that are currently soaring in popularity. The Opus features a 65” 4K Ultra high-definition display, the trademark triangle side-light symbol used on all Concerto models, dual spin buttons, a USB charger outlet and even dual cup holders.

In addition to the new Solstice theme on the Concerto Opus, Konami will also showcase Riches with Daikoku Triple Sparkle, which has similar betting value features. The other new game on this large-scale platform is a linked progressive called Treasure Ball. Compatible base game themes on this link will include many of the popular KP3+ titles, such as Chili Chili Fire, Dragon’s Law Twin Fever and Sparkling Roses. This Treasure Ball concept features a flashback to the coin-operated toy capsule machines from arcades and carnival midways. Konami says about it, “Each ball can be recognized by its large globe of round mystery prize balls, which players can redeem and reveal during the bonus.”

In addition to multiple new themes for the entire Concerto product line, their horse racing Fortune Cup and arcade-style Beat Square, they’ll also show a completely new cabinet known as the KX43 and a cardless player tracking product.
